Snake vs. Cat

May 9, 2008

I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of an animal kingdom battle royale. You know field 64 animals of various levels of danger and visciousness and pair them off. Who would win? Sure a pride of lions can take down an elephant, but what about one on one? Or crocodile v. panther. If the field was half water?

Snake v. Mongoose is always a classic.

We’ve seen Gator v. Wildebeest. Lion v. Gazelle. But you know you’ve got to mix it up. Throw in things no one would expect. Like this:

What do you know about Little Bitchy Dog v. Crab?  Sure, the crab has no stopping power, but that claw on the left looks dangerous…

…and delicious.

Now this would not have been an intriguing matchup, like a 15 v a 2 seed, but here is one that went down in real life. Kitten v. snake.

LIke I said, we know who wins, but check this out.

Damn, snake caught him feet first…

When Art Informs Life

January 19, 2008

I just came across an article in Esquire Magazine that featured work by R. Luke Dubois who had a brilliant idea.  He took every president’s State of the Union Address and analyzed the most common words.  He then put them into a backlit eye chart by frequency.  I think it speaks for itself.  Check out other presidents through time at his website.  The collection is called “Hindsight is 20/20”.

I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream…exactly the same.

October 15, 2007

So I guess there is an inside joke in the sound design industry (the outside joke is that these cats were probably in the AV Club at your high school and were all tremendous dorks) that they like to sneak into movies.

The funny thing is, subconsciously that is exactly what I expect it to sound like when someone falls from something high. In fact, I’d be disappointed if it didn’t. For example:

As good as it was that the caller hit you with that “uh oh”, how much better would that have been if my man had hit you with “uhhhhaaaahhhhhhuh” on his way down. It just isn’t the same. It looks like his head hit that floor pretty crisply though. I appreciate the fact that “he’s up” rapidly became the standard for his health too. I guess you gotta be ready for the unexpected in showbiz.
